North Sea

Beaches

Almost forty kilometres of unbroken sand along the west coast. They are not all the same — here is which one suits which day.

Sylt's west beach runs virtually without interruption from Hörnum in the south to the Ellenbogen in the north. The difference is not the sand but the infrastructure: supervised sections with beach chair hire and food on one hand, kilometres of empty dune beach on the other.

It is about a hundred metres from the apartment to the beach crossing. So you don't need to plan — you can go down for an hour.

Abschnitte

Sechs Strände, sechs Charaktere.

Hauptstrand and Brandenburger Strand, Westerland
The two central sections right by the town. Supervised, with beach chairs, toilets and food. The busiest, but the best served — and walkable for you.
Nordstrand, Westerland
North of the town centre, quieter than the main beach and still easy to reach. The compromise if you want facilities without the crowd.
Buhne 16, Kampen
The traditional naturist section north of Kampen, known since the 1960s. Wide dune landscape, almost no buildings.
Rotes Kliff, Kampen
The island's most striking landform: a reddish cliff up to thirty metres high. Not a bathing beach as such, but the clifftop path is the finest walk on Sylt.
Ellenbogen, List
The northern tip and the northernmost point in Germany, reached via a private toll road. Space, wind, two lighthouses, nothing else. Swimming is prohibited in many places because of the currents — read the signs.
Wadden Sea, east coast
Not a beach but World Heritage. Walkable at low tide, but only on a guided mudflat walk. Here the tides are not scenery, they are a hazard.

Sicherheit an der Nordsee

The North Sea is not a swimming pool. Currents, tidal channels and outgoing water deserve respect. Swim at supervised sections, watch the lifeguard flags, and only enter the mudflats on a guided walk.
