What to do on Sylt when you're not on the beach — including the question every North Sea visitor eventually asks: what about rain?
Sylt works in any weather, just differently. In sunshine it is a beach with villages attached; in a storm it is a genuinely dramatic landscape.
Out and about
Six ways to see the island.
- Cycling
- Around 200 kilometres of surfaced cycle paths, practically flat, often just behind the dunes. Westerland to List along the west coast is the classic route. Bikes can be hired at several places in Westerland.
- Mudflat walking
- Guided walks into the Wadden Sea start on the east coast, including from Keitum and Hörnum. Only with a guide — the tides are fast and the way back disappears.
- Braderuper Heide
- A nature reserve between Wenningstedt and Kampen, with paths across the heath down to the Wadden Sea. The heather flowers in August and September.
- Rotes Kliff and Uwe Dune
- The coastal path along the Rotes Kliff at Kampen, and further north the Uwe Dune — at around 52 metres the highest point on the island. Up the steps, and Sylt lies below you.
- Spa and thalasso
- Seawater treatment is a tradition on Sylt. In Westerland the Syltness Center and the Sylter Welle sit directly on the promenade — both within walking distance.
- Culture and history
- The Altfriesisches Haus in Keitum shows 18th-century island living; St Severin church has stood since the 13th century. The Denghoog in Wenningstedt is a Neolithic passage grave — around 5,000 years old, and you can go inside.

- Sylter Welle: seawater leisure pool on the promenade in Westerland.
- Sylt Aquarium: North Sea tanks right on the promenade.
- Syltness Center: sauna and thalasso, minutes from the apartment.
- Altfriesisches Haus and St Severin in Keitum.
- The Denghoog in Wenningstedt — indoors, dry and 5,000 years old.
- And the honest answer: raincoat on and go to the beach anyway. In a storm the North Sea looks better than in sunshine.
