Arriving

Location & Getting here

Sylt is an island without a road bridge. That sounds complicated and isn't — you just need to know it once.

The Hindenburgdamm has connected Sylt to the mainland since 1927, but it carries only railway tracks. There is no road link. If you want your car with you, it goes on a car train.

Ways to the island

Four ways to arrive.

By car on the car train
Loading in Niebüll, arrival in Westerland. Two operators run the route: Deutsche Bahn's Sylt Shuttle and RDC's Sylt Shuttle Plus. The crossing takes a good half hour. Book ahead in high season and at weekends — otherwise you queue. The apartment comes with a free parking space for one car.
By train
The Marschbahn runs directly to Westerland, including from Hamburg-Altona. It is around 950 metres from the station to the apartment — walkable, even with luggage. The island works well without a car: buses to every village leave from the station.
By ferry via Denmark
A car ferry runs from Havneby on the Danish island of Rømø to List in the north of Sylt. Useful if you are coming from Denmark or want to make a loop. List to Westerland is about forty minutes by car.
By plane
Sylt Airport is around 2.7 kilometres from the apartment, with connections from several German cities — varying by season.
